A Sealed EX Team Rocket Returns Box Sold for $384,300 on a Run Across the Whole Set

The 2004 box sold for nearly five times its last eBay sale as every chase in the set ran, from the three Gold Star starters to the Rocket's ex cards.

A factory-sealed 2004 Pokémon EX Team Rocket Returns booster box sold for $384,300 in Goldin's Pokémon 30th Anniversary Auction on Sunday, drawing 21 bids for its 36 packs. Goldin titled the lot "Possible Gold Star Holo Torchic, Treecko, Mudkip." The last public sale before it was $82,500 on eBay on Sept. 17, 2025.

Those three Gold Stars have earned the billing. A Gold Star Torchic #108 in PSA 9 went for around $14,050 last fall and sold for $60,000 on Oct. 18, while PSA 9 copies of Mudkip #107 and Treecko #109 have sold for four to five times their fall 2025 prices.

The Gold Stars are only part of what's in those packs, though. A Rocket's Mewtwo ex #99 PSA 10 sold for $9,600 at Fanatics Collect in September 2025 and for $107,360 at Goldin the same night as the box. A Rocket's Snorlax ex #104 PSA 10 went from $9,300 at Fanatics Collect last October to $135,420 in that same Goldin auction.

The Gold Star singles are cooling right now, as a Treecko PSA 10 that sold for $504,000 at Fanatics Collect on Oct. 11 was followed by one at $240,000 there on Sunday.

But a box doesn't need any one card to hold its price. A 2020 pull-rate guide on EliteFourum puts the odds at about one Gold Star in every two boxes, and every pack is also a shot at the Rocket's ex cards that ran right along with them. Whoever bought that Treecko on Oct. 11 is down more than $250,000 in two weeks, while the box buyer still holds a ticket to every chase in the set. If I wanted a piece of Team Rocket Returns now, I'd take sealed over any single slab and wait for the Gold Star PSA 10s to find a floor.
