One Masaki Gengar Closes on eBay Tonight While Another Is on PSA's Stolen List
Bidding on the PSA 9 stood at $35,300 at midday Saturday, between the two copies that sold on Thursday.
Seventy-three bids had taken a 1999 Pokémon Japanese Vending Masaki promo Gengar holo in a PSA 9 to $35,300 by midday Saturday, ahead of its 9:34 p.m. ET close on eBay.
A PSA 9 sold for $25,800 at Fanatics Collect on Aug. 23 and for $40,800 there on Thursday.
Tonight's bid looks cheap against that $40,800. But another PSA 9 went for $34,800 at Alt that same Thursday. Tonight's bid has already passed it.
The PSA 10 has run even harder. One sold for $207,400 at Goldin on Aug. 9, while another went for $480,000 at Alt on Thursday.
This week's other Gengar news is less fun. PSA's list of the 6,451 graded items stolen from a FedEx truck after pickup at its Santa Ana facility includes a Masaki Gengar, though the list doesn't give its grade. Tonight's slab isn't that one, since its cert, 176074651, doesn't match the stolen copy. Run the cert on PSA's website before you bid on any copy over the next few weeks. A stolen one won't come up, because PSA has deactivated every stolen cert.
If you bought a PSA 9 for around $25,800 this summer, tonight's bid already puts you about $10,000 ahead. For anyone bidding, Thursday set the range between Alt and Fanatics Collect. I'd stop at $38,000, close to the middle of those two sales, and let someone else pay Fanatics prices.
The rest of tonight's closings are on CardWire's auctions page.
