Card Market Beat Writer

Cards are more than a hobby now. Single cards sell for millions. Private equity owns the companies that grade and sell them. Collectors check price history before they buy. The news that moves this market is still scattered across X, Instagram, breaker streams, and auction listings. Serious analysis can be hard to separate from promotion.

CardWire is the front page of the card market. We launched in September to track what moves card prices across sports and TCG, starting with the NBA, NFL, MLB, Pokémon, and One Piece.

The opportunity

This is the first hire at CardWire, an early-stage startup in the card industry. You'll be joining Jeff (CEO) and Alan (CTO) as we build out our vision of "CoinDesk for Cards".

This role grows as CardWire grows. As the business scales, that means higher pay, more responsibility, and more ownership. Join us at the beginning of something great.

The job

You'll follow the card market every day and find the moments that card collectors and investors care about. A moment can be a sports event, like a player milestone, a rookie's NBA debut, or a quarterback's injury. It could also be something more speculative; like demotions, underperformance, or trades. Moments also come from hobby itself, like a record auction sale, a chase card getting pulled, or a new set hitting shelves.

Not everything in sports is a card moment. A moment counts when it hits a card people actually trade and the prices or listings respond. Part of the job is telling the difference.

When you find one, you write it up. You explain what happened, which cards it touched, what the prices did, and what it means for the people holding those cards or looking to buy or sell. When Jaxson Dart got hurt this month or Verlander threw his last pitch in his career, that meant reporting on what happened to their rookie cards the same day and tracking the price action over time.

What you'll write

  • Short-form posts, every day. These go out on CardWire's X account and on cardwire.com. You can repost them from your own account. CardWire.com posts are generally no more than 2-4 short paragraphs as needed.
  • One or two longer pieces a month, on a story or novel concept that deserves more than a post.
  • Insightful and useful replies/QTs from larger accounts.

You decide what belongs on X, what belongs on the site, and what belongs on both. The format is your call. We care about judgment and results.

What we give you

  • Tools to look up every card, its sales, its price history, and the events around it
  • A login to publish on cardwire.com
  • Your byline on everything you write
  • Creative freedom once the trial week is done

How we'll measure it

We want posts that are accurate, on time, and worth reading, every day. Growing a new channel takes time, so in the first months we'll judge the work on consistency and quality. Followers, engagement on X, and traffic to cardwire.com come once we establish ourselves as a credible source of news.

Ground rules

  • Every fact needs a source. Every price comes from real sales.
  • Share your view when the evidence backs it up. Put that evidence in the post.
  • Stay as objective as possible, while maintaining your voice. "His rookie card dropped 40 percent this week" is our job. "Buy his rookie card now" isn't unless the data points can back it up.

Who we're looking for

  • You love cards and you want to build experience as a journalist or get reps in the card industry.
  • You write clearly and fast, with numbers that check out.
  • You'd rather post every day than wait for the perfect story.
  • Knowing Pokémon, One Piece, and TCG is a big plus.
  • Proficiency with Claude and/or similar AI tools

Pay and hours

  • Trial week: $300 for the week.
  • After the trial: $1,000 a month for about 20 hours a week, up to $2,000+ a month for about 40 hours a week.
  • Bonuses paid in cash or sealed product.
  • Fully remote. You set your schedule around the news.

The trial week

The trial is one paid week doing the real job, working directly with Jeff, the CEO.

  • Cover the card market on X all day. Plan on at least five posts a day, more when the news calls for it.
  • Put your best two or three each day on cardwire.com.
  • We'll walk you through how we find stories today. By Friday, tell us three ways to make it better.

During the trial, you draft and we publish. At the end of the week, we'll look at the moments you picked, consistent posting, and insightful writing. If it's a fit, we'll offer you the role and you'll publish on your own from there.

How to apply

Email jeff@cardwire.com or DM @Cardwire_ on X with two things you've written, plus one card moment from this week and what it did to prices.
